Credit Card Fraud

Hi all,
A couple of months ago I experienced the pleasure of someone using my credit card and my statement gave me a nasty surprise of being £3.5k more than I had been expecting. I am now having huge problems getting this sorted and the balance removed from my account - apparently a Barclays credit card balance of 3k had been transferred to mine - obvioulsy nothing to do with me. After 15 phone calls and lots of frustration, I have now been told I have to write to the company, giving all the details!!!! (How the hell should I know any details!???) and they will take it from there..

Anyway, I wondered if anyone out there might know where I could get a template letter to fit this situation? If anyone has any advice for me that would be excellent too...

Please help!

Claire:confused:

Something as serious as this really should have been put in writing by yourself as soon as it was noticed. A verbal complaint is sufficient, but written complaints seem to give more weight to your argument.

I can't imagine this is fraud though as it would be too easily traceable as to where the BT has come from. It's more likely to be a human error on the wrong account details being given or the person processing the request getting it wrong.

I can't see the need for a template letter, just write the details of what has actually happened and all of the calls you have made. I trust you did note times and names of who you've spoken to ? All financial institutions have set complaints procedures which have to be followed as they form part of the FSA's banking code. Ask for a copy by return of your letter.

Fraud wouldn't deal with it anyway. It would be Disputes.

If it is a BT with a digit wrong I'm sure that is being recalled at the other end too. It can take a long time to recall a BT, upto eight weeks (or sometimes longer) from experience.

Don't forget the interest you will have been charged on this amount when making your claim. If they just reverse the BT you will be well out of pocket.

They should refund the interest as well. There shouldn't be a problem with that.
  • agree that this is not a fraud, this is more on human error.
  • When they remove the interest, check they don't add trailing interest the next month!
