Was this backed up for them to install it or did you expect a magic wond?

That might seem a bit blunt, but you asked & I'm wondering what you expected or whether you have been able to provide them with this and they have not done it?

As far as you're rights it would depend on losses. Personal data you should either know (as the words 'personal data' suggest this is information about yourself) or have backed up. Programs etc can be reinstalled often by contacting them with purchase info (or registration details etc) and they simply send you the installation program again. You've probably haven't lost anything you could claim against.

They always warn you to back up files before sending it. They usually have to wipe the drive to repair.

Yep, pretty much what I've said. The op should be claiming against themself for not doing such a fundamental thing.

I'm also a little dismayed given the situation here of the compensation culture attitude that has actually lead to this thread even being started.

You are entitled to either an equivalent laptop or the money for one. That's all. Ask for one in person and then follow it up with a request in writing.

You are not entitled to any compensation for your personal data as to put it simply your personal data is your personal data and you should back it up regularly, whether you send your computer in for repair or not.

For example if your hard disc fails it is cheaper for you to have a back up for your data then pay someone hundreds of pounds to get the data off it for you.

Also as part of any computer repair process you agree that the repairer has no liability for your personal data.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

is the replacement one a permanent replacement?? is the spec the same as your previous?? if not make sure you claim one to the same level of the one they lost, including the inclusive programs you got.

    odd they 'lost' it tho...
