You poor thing - this is a worry.

Found this on another site about an old cesspit:

May be helpful in establishing if this is the same thing.

    Found this old thread too:

Would the plans for your house showing any such detail? Did the search for when you bought the property show anything?

Nothing on the plans or on the searches. No indication of mine workings on searches either so am reasonably confident not a mine working. Interesting that the first link you provided describes the lay of our land to a tee before we removed the top soil. Hmmmmmm maybe we can create a sunken garden. Or use it for rainwater storage (now this WOULD be useful).

KL, that sounds like a close match then. One of the contributors in the other thread mentions contacting the Environmental Health Office at your local council. Perhaps find their details on your local council's website.

It would be useful to establish this is what it is for certain, perhaps find out if a surveyor (if they are the right experts) could assess it for you.:A

Just a thought but could it be the remains of an old concrete air raid shelter that has been filled in? My cousin found an air raid shelter made of reinforced concrete buried in their back garden completely intact.

It could be an old underground rain water tank that has been badly capped off many years ago.
I have one on my property.......all the rain water from the house used to go into it many years ag then the water was used for washing clothes etc.
I filled it in and capped it 20 years ago and diverted the rain water into the sewer........maybe nows the time to put it back into use and get a discount of our water company
