Digital camera advice please! Search used!

I know this has been asked a million times and I have found lots of good information from searching but I wondered if I could ask some more questions? :o

At the moment I own a Pentax Optio 30 and a Kodak something (carp!) neither of these cameras offer what I want but I bought a Sony A300 DSLR and that was a step too far!

Basically I am looking for a good quality camera that can be used indoors, for taking pictures of the kids, landscapes (distant). I don't need anything too technical but would like a camera that will carry me through for a while. Have approx £250 to spend.

Any recommendations? Have looked at the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 so far but don't want to rush in and make another mistake!

Thanks

  • the pana is a good cam, i'd also recommend a canon ixus, something like the 860is (image stabilised), ideal for indoor shots.

I would say that you have probably found the best camera for your needs.

The Panasonic TZ5 is an excellent camera.

Lumix LX3? If you can find another little bit of cash (sell the rest).
F2.0 leica lens and 24mm wide angle will be great for indoors. (get close in to the MIL and make her nose look bigger). £309 is the best I can suggest (from a known source) It has a 1/1.6" sensor vs the TZ5 1/2.33" sensor.

    or +1 as Dwain suggested.
or the TZ5 as you have selected.

canon G9 just about on your budget.
or try ebay for an older G model.

or how about the canon powershot S5 for a fantastic zoom lens?
    (about 200 quid from pixmania).

£250 is far too much for a compact. A bridge camera would be a better proposition - at least you get a viewfinder - IMHO definately required for landscape shots.

If you want a compact pay less than £100.

    what's wrong with the Sony?

There was nothing wrong with the Sony but it just wasn't the right camera for me - was also quite heavy!

Thank you for all your recommendations, with regards to the bridge camera - what is a good one to look at?

Sorry for all the questions but I want a good camera.

I would second the Canon G9 - I have one and am very happy with it.

If you've got £250 to play with, I'd recommend adding £17 to it and getting a Nikon D40 rather than getting a bridge camera. It's Nikon's entry-level dSLR, but it's still a very capable camera. It's quite light and small for a dSLR, and it's very easy to use.

The Sony is a bridge camera, so if the weight is the issue, you are unlikely to find anything much smaller.

The Sony A300 is a dSLR, and is about 100g heavier than the Nikon D40.
