New Laptop - What to put on it??

Hi

Just got a new laptop basics are

· Intel Celeron M 370 Processor 1.50GHz
· 400 MHz FSB
· 1 Mb Cache
· 512 Mb RAM
· 40 Gb Hard Drive
· Double Layer DVD RW MultiDrive
· 15" TFT Display
· Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
· 64Mb UniChrome Pro integrated graphics

I am getting Office but can anyone recommend what progs for safety to put on there? I know there's the other thread for what security do you use but i also need advice on things such as music player etc.

The main thing is not to lose speed on the thing!!

Also, I have 1mb NTL broadband at home on desktop, not too bothered about wireless at the moment but when i get the thing home, how do i get internet on laptop - is it just a case of plugging the laptop to the phoneline where the desktop is now??

Thanks

Windows Media Player v10 is fine for music and video's etc.

Yes you should just plug the ethernet or usb cable (depending what you have) from the back of your desktop into your laptop.

As you say you do not want to slow it down, a few goods steps I always follow:
    - Always have some anti virus running (AVG free is sufficient)
    - Always have spyware/adware softer monitoring and run a manual check every week or so. (as you say, there are many suggestions in other threads dedicated to it)

Importantly for me, never install something you don't know or want, if you do and think realise you don't want it (or it's rubbish - most of the time!) uninstall through Add/Remove in Control Panel. Also keep various restore points of stages you are happy, or like myself, create a ghost image.

Wherever possible, I use portable programs that don't stick their files and settings in the registry and all over the place:

I've created a folder called Portable for them all in Program Files and a shortcut to that folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs so I can get a cascading menu for them all in the Programs menu
