There are polarised views on this topic, as this thread has shown. I can see why people get upset if it seems their views/advice don't seem to be taken into consideration or even acknowledged .. keep in mind people post advice voluntarily, so it is disheartening if it appears the user who has posted the question does not seem to be listening to the answer ... the secret is open discussion, without resorting to trading insults... best post nothing rather than one that winds people up.0

Exactly my point. The signal-to-noise ratio in here is beyond belief.0 -
I'd just like to say, that it's terrible threads like this one that have made this particular sub-forum the worst on the boards.
If you don't like it, if the discussion upsets you because it raises opinions and thoughts contrary to your own, perhaps you'd be best staying on one of the happy MSE sections where there is less serious discussion or conflict.
:lovethoug:smileyhea:heart2::kisses:.
Things seldom ever get nasty here. The discussion touches upon areas close to people's own future well-being, with house prices and the economy, so it can get heated without going over the top.
We get a full range of views here... from the guy (maybe on this thread) who thinks he's got a "win-win" situation as he could get £25K knocked off to bag a £150,000 house, and happy that he should be able to afford that regardless of possible higher interest payments, and clearly confident he won't suffer a pay cut or lose his job.
To people like me... a big bad bear who believes, alongside some other commentators, that we are in for some very difficult times which will last many many years and will see house prices fall dramatically.
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/economics/article4596656.eceTERRY SMITH, chief executive of the broker Tullett Prebon, sat in his City office earlier this month, taking the measure of the credit crisis.“People say we are in a downturn like the early 1990s,” said Smith. “I think it’s going to be worse than that. We’re in for something like the 1970s or even the 1930s.”“The West — especially America with the entrepreneurial energies of its new immigrants — will come back,” he said. But as the boom lasted a generation, it may take a generation to get over the bust.0 -

This is true, the trouble is, most of those people in group 1 have been in group 2 for so long that now that they (we) are seeing that we can afford property all of a sudden, it is very hard to resist jumping onto the ship whether it sinks or not!
I understand where you are coming from. However, you have had to be patient for so long. If you can just manage another one or two years, your future quality of life will be just so much better.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Heaven forbid I want to discover more about House Prices in a subforum called House Prices. And it's not about 'thoughts contrary to my own'. This thread could only have been posted for 2 reasons, either a) the OP wanted to crow about how clever they are and how stupid people looking to buy now are, and have a nice circlejerk about it, or b) they wanted to pick a fight. Neither does anything to advance the discussion. This is a pointless thread, which just makes this board all the more intimidating for people to approach.0 -
Well said Mr Malkin but be aware that 1 & 2 apply to a HUGE number of threads on MSE.
Hence a lot of the 'old school' has abandoned it altogether or returned under a pseudonym."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
There's a handful of people on this forum whi sign in under various other nickmames - and even THANK themselves! Sad - but true.
They're the ones who haven't got a pot to p*** in - and know that they NEVER will get on the property ladder - but they don't wan't want other people to either: so they talk the market down and hope we'll all end up living in s***holes like they have to.0
