I have just installed XP home on a new machine, and have installed most of the programs etc. However, I have partitioned the disk to have three, one for OS, one for page file and the third for everything else. Is there any way of stopping the page file partition showing up in explorer and poping up annoying messages telling me that the disk's running low on space? Also, is there a proper way to move the documents and settings folder to avoid problems, or to make programs default to installing on another partition?
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

Why the hell have you done this? It is completely and entirely pointless. There's no point moving the pagefile to its own partition if its on the same hard drive as the OS. The only advantage with moving the pagefile is to move it to a seperate drive on another IDE channel and then you get the performance benefits. There is absolutely no point whatsoever having applications install on a different partition because if the OS one goes down, you've still got to reinstall them to restore the registry entries so you've gained nothing.
Repartition the hard drive into two. Stick everything on the first partition and use some backup software to regularly back the Documents and Settings folder to the other partition.0 -
No, page files fragment hideously, causing massive performance reductions. That does help, I prefer not to have to defrag every other day.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Just make the swap file a fixed size and it doesn't fragment. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Ram is cheap the more ram you have the less pagefile. I dont see the point tbh why you done this either0

2nd partition on the same drive for backups is not really a good idea. If the drive fails you loose the lot (It happened to me). Buy a second hard drive and use that for backups.

For the love of god....
There's a little saying that applies to you:
"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."
Why do you have to defrag every other day at all? It's completely pointless.
Page files don't fragment ridiculously and it doesn't cause massive performance reductions. I suggest that if your computer is using a pagefile that much that you might want to actually fix the problem properly and add some more RAM to the machine as the only reason for a page file to be hammered is insufficient RAM in a computer.0 -
