I would have no hesitation in taking back the unworn clothes as "unwanted presents" if I could buy the same clothes in the sales after Christmas.
You'd have to keep the tags on the clothes bought for Christmas though. I'm sure you know that you can't take back the sales clothes because they "red-dot" the label to show they were bought in the sale.
 Go for it!!
I meant to add that in Next you don't even need the receipt because the item if bought before the sales hasn't been "red-dotted" therefore they assume you've paid full-price for it, but you'll only get vouchers without a receipt. I had a skirt in my wardrobe that I wasn't sure about in the summer. It stayed in there unworn with tags on for a couple of months. Bought the same skirt in the sale (it seemed more attractive once it was halfprice). I took the original skirt back and received a full refund in vouchers, which were spent on more items in the sale!!0

did it last year after xmas, returned with no quibble from the shop then bought twice as much clothes in the sale for the same amountGive blood - its free0

You could always try telling your MIL that the clothes would be much cheaper in the sale, and ask if she wouldn't mind waiting until then. You never know, she might be glad to save some pennies (or she might buy twice as much if you're lucky!)0

I will tell mil to just give me money(really cant imagine her queing in sales ) and i will get the clothes i want for him, i think you have 28 days with recipt to take items back so if i get a load of gear in mid decemder i can wait for the sale and check if anything has been half priced ..........
sorry if i sound thick but im new to all this its amazing how having a baby makes you think about money in a different light.
so say if a bought an item at full price i could take it back get refund and then ask the sales person to sell it me back at the sale price or does it have to go back into stock and be 'red spotted'?0

It would have to be red spotted. A month is a long time in a little babies world, they grow so much, so you may find that you need to get larger sizes. Just take them back with the receipt and tell them you need to get the next size up - which should all be in the 1/2 price sale by then.
HTHI can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0

I bought a bag before Xmas which was then half price after. My friend spotted it and bought me another. I then took that back with my original receipt and gave the my friend the sale price.0

Sometimes i buy it the day before the sale starts over the phone(do it early as other people can be priveliged sale customers & also buy on that day). Anyway when i have done this it has sometimes come at sale price even though i ordered it before sale started!0

buying over the phone i like that idea ..and for as buying the next size up more like 2 sizes up my little un isnt that little he is only 6 months and most of his clothes are 12 month size ...bit of a bruiser my boy.0

            Hi jopsey
I bought a new suit for my husband and an outfit for my son a week before the summer sale and we had to use the stuff to wear to a wedding, the next week the items were in the sale so I ordered them online, when they were delivered I took them back to shop with the original reciept and got a full refund as it was within 28 days also the stuff you buy in the sale online doesn't come with a red dot on it, they come in the original packaging.
It might be worth suggesting to your MIL to give you vouchers if she doesn't like to give money as a present. I always go a queue up for the Next sale. I have managed to pick up some fab clothes for my little boy, I nearly always buy a years clothes in advance (especially his winter coat) while its in the sale coz they grow so quickly! 0 0

In previous years, Next shops have had signs stating that customers could not return goods until about two days after the sale started. This is probably due to the volume of customers, however I didnt want other MSEs to go in on the day of the sale expecting to get a refund on items bought before Crimbo. There's no woman sicker than the woman who is sick on her day off !0
