Damp on Adjoining Wall of Semi

We have a patch of damp which has appeared over the last few days and is now over 2ft x 1ft on the wall of our living room. It's a 1920s semi-bungalow and the point where the damp is is just about in the middle of the two houses from front to back and side to side. Our neighbours living room is on the other side.
The bathroom / shower is on the next wall with the water tank above in the loft (about a metre away from the damp patch) but OH has been up there and says everything looks bone dry with no leaks from our tank.
Any ideas what it could be?

It could be a leak in the roof and the water is running down the wall. I suggest that you have a word with your neighbor to see if their wall is damp and they could look in the roof space......regards bri0
