Rockwell

Around 4 years ago my son had a debt of around £4000 passed onto rockwells & they came to an agreement of a figure to pay each month. This agreement my son has stuck to, paying the agreed ammount each month without fail & the outstanding balance is now just over £1000.

He bought a house 18 mnths ago as he and his partner had a baby on the way & with all the expense involved in buying a house and having a new baby he still managed to pay the monthly ammount to rockwells.

He had a rather large unexpected bill to pay last month & he contacted rockwells via telephone to ask if it would be allright to pay a little less just for the month in question ( as a one-off). The lady on the phone at rockwells, he said, was very polite & helpfull and said it would be fine to pay a reduced ammount just for the one month in question.

A few days later he is getting telephone calls at home & at work demanding that he increases his future payments. His partner answered a phone call from them & she said the "person" calling was very rude and threatening them with bailiffs!

Now, he has had enough of dealing with these people and has decided to pay off in full the remaining balance.

On a balance of £1000, what ammount does anyone think would be a sensible figure to offer them for full & final settlement of this debt?

Many thanks.

Sorry I don't know, but I'll give you a bump,
£1,000 doesn't seem big enough to warrant such heavy handedness does it?

Hi & thanks for replying. No,considering the ammount outstanding their attitude does seem a little draconian.

They do seem like the kind of outfit that like to try to intimidate.

Just an update......they offered him a full & final settlement figure of £900. Does that seem reasonable or should he try for a lower figure?

    Thank you!

I personally would try for a lower figure. But not over the phone. In writing only to them. And if they accept then they must also confirm it in writing. The problem is they mey settle but another DCA could easily pick up the remainder of the debt and start hassling all over again. So writing only. And keep copies of everything.

Has he ever requested a copy of his Credit agreement from rockwells. If they are hassling after he has been so good with paying I would be inclined to to find out if they actually have one. I know he has been paying all this time, BUT, it may well be they bought the debt for very little. It would certainly be worth a shot. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Also fire off the telephone harassment letter. In other words its a bog off we will only deal with you in writing from now on in. And yes they are bullies. Tell him not to be frightened into paying anything more than he can afford anyway. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Hi & thanks for posting. This was a credit card debt that he got into when younger & stupid .

Any further correspondence with this outfit will be in writing with copies kept for reference ( as you quite rightly point out) & they will be sent via special delivery, or at the very least, recorded delivery.

Not sure if he ever requested a copy of the credit agreement, will have to check on that.

Got to be worth a try at getting a lower figure, though i can understand the temptation to pay the £900 they "offered" as a full & final settlement, just to get rid of the b******s!

    Many thanks again smashedbooboo :)

can i ask what the original debt figure was? if it was quite a high amount, Rockwell have probably already made their profit on this debt anyway, so to get £100 off the figure is laughable. i once tried to make a settlement with them for a debt of around £1500. the best they could offer me was £1300 as a settlement.

as a starting figure, i would begin with £500. keep to the figure for 3 letters and if they still dont accept, only them should you consider increasing the offer.
