Scanner Driving Me Mad!!!

Hi all,

If someone can sort this out for me I would be most grateful.

I bought an Artec E+48U scanner off of ebay. It came with no usb lead or software. I borrowed a usb lead off of a printer and managed to download both the Scan Panel software and the drivers. I plugged the scanner in and the "Found New Hardware" dialogue box appeared. I let it search automatically and it transferred the files over. All was working fine and I was scanning my old photos in to my hearts content.

I then decided to take the usb lead out of the front port on my P.C. to place it in the back port out of the way. Well that is the last time it has worked. It keeps coming up with the usual...make sure your scanner is connected, the light is on, drivers installed etc.

Right, so I have now uninstalled the software that I put on. Completed a System Restore, reinstalled the software, tried different usb ports on the P.C. even tried a different lead. All to no avail.

When I plug the scanner usb in now I sometimes get three warning tones from the P.C. instead of the normal two tones, as though there is an error somewhere. What have I done? Have I corrupted the drivers, bios or something like that. Can I get round this problem without binning the scanner and buying another one or will I have the same problem with that one?

It is Windows XP compatible which is what I am running.

So much for picking up a bargain. I must emphasise though that it WAS WORKING.

Cheers...Gracust

    Gracust,
I had exactly the same problem on a neighbours pc/scanner, these were the steps I followed (and saved for future use, as I feel I may be called upon again :-) )

    <---

    1. Remove the MEM48U or E+48U listed under "add/remove program" option in control panel (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.)

    2. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > View > select Show hidden files and folders. Close Folder option and exit to desktop. Go to Start > Search > For Files and Folders > search for the following files under the local hard drive: MEM48U/E+48U, usba4 and delete all files found.

    3. Then go into My Computer > C:\ > WINDOWS or WINNT > INF > View > Details > look under OEM file w/ the largest # at the end and double click on only oem# not the oem#.pnf. It will open the notepad and check on the top of the notepad screen stated that if it is E+48U listed. If listed delete it w/ the pnf file also. If not listed for MEM48U/E+48U close every thing and follow the below instructions.

    4. Uninstall the MEM48U/E+48U or usb device in device manager (Start>Settings>control panel>systems>hardware>device manager) then unplug the scanner.

    5. Insert the MEM48U/E+48U CD and install Scanner Driver and make sure the scanner is NOT connected before or during the installation.

    6. When Finish restart the computer and plug in MEM48U/E+48U scanner and when the Windows 2000/XP digital signature warning message shown, click Yes to continue to install.

    7. Once the Found Hardware wizard completed, go to Device Manager and look for Imaging device and please list any yellow! in device manager. If none listed, you could start to use the scanner.

Can't guarantee this will work for you and would stress to anyone deleting files to be careful what you are deleting!

Hope this helps, as I had many frustrating hours before I found it!

    PS,
Doubt you have damaged anything, just a screwed up driver/config issue

Sorry to hear it's still not working.....another thing I just wanted to check, is the scanner plugged directly into the PC USB and not in a USB hub? Had similar problems when connected to a USB hub, eliminating the hub also resolved similar problems.

I will try and dig out the driver version I used, maybe slight differences in the driver versions?!?!
  • Remove Scanner

    Right Click My Computer.

    Click Hardware Tab

    Click Device Manager

    Once thats up, click view

    Click Show Hidden Devices.

Right Click your scanner and click Uninstall. If there is more than one instance, uninstall those too.

Restart PC, and reinstall the drivers. THEN, turn off the computer, plug the scanner in, and turn it back on. You should be able to install then

    Tell me how it goes!

    Matt.
