What year do they want you to complete one for?
Have you called the telephone number on the letter to ask them why they want you complete a tax return?
What sources of income do you have? IE: are you self-employed as opposed to an employee?

    Hiya!
I have got the letter out again and it just says we are asking you to complete a tax return each year.
I am self employed as well as an employee for a retail shop.

If you only became self-employed after 6 April 2008 you won't have to complete a return until next year. If it was before that date you will need to have a paper return in by 31 October 2008 or file online by 31 January 2009.

You need to know that a tax return has to deal with many circumstances so it is likely that a large number of questions will not apply to you.

Since you are both employed and self employed you will have to complete both employment (SA102) and self employment pages (SA103) and some information on the main body of the tax return (SA100).

HMRC run free courses for people setting up as self employed to guive them guidance on what their responsibilites are and what records they need to enable them to file their tax returns. If you read this thread you will find out about them - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1105747
