No problem - enjoy! Having raided my mum's garage I've just put it in jars and it filled 6 1/2! Think she's wanting me to return at least one of the jars full!!

If this happens to you again in the future, get yourself to the nearest bottle bank and wait a while. It won't be long before two or three people come along with jam jars to go in the recycling and Bob's your uncle.

Some of the smaller charity shops also usually have a few kicking around in their storage areas too. You can also use well washed empty tins, such as baked beans etc with the normal greaseproof circles and cellophane tops in such an emergency. Hope that helps.

Idea for next time... do you have the three box (paper, tins and glass) recycling scheme in your area? Nip round to your neighbours and ask for any jars out of their glass box.

Obviously the ones who store their boxes in garages and sheds would be nicer - not like ours which are outside and full because we forget to take them out front for weeks on end!
  • Thanks for the ideas. I'll be making more tomorrow! Unfortunately we only have brown and black bins and can you believe I've followed the bin lorry down our lane before and seen them emptying both bins into the back of the same lorry - regardless of contents! Anyway that's a different story! Thanks again for the ideas!

I know its not really OS but the other day in Home Bargins store they had the Larger size of Baby Food Jars for 10p, I have bought a load of these ready for making Xmas pressies. (I've just give them to a friend who had a little one still eating jars and she has promised to return the jars)

Might be an idea for smallish jars??

Tesco value mint sauce is only 10p a jar at the moment - the jars aren't huge - but it's cheaper than Lakeland etc

  • Hi All,
I made a load of blackberry and apple jam earlier but only had 5 jam jars (I totally underestimated how much there would be - you can tell I'm a complete jam making novice!).
The 5 jars only took 1/2 of the jam I made, I don't want to throw the rest - can I keep a tub of it in the fridge and use now and can I freeze the rest in containers???
Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you :o
  • yes you can, or you could pop the lid on it, get more jars then bring it back to the boil tomorrow and bottle it then!

    Hi Tired_Mummy,

There was a recent thread on this that may help you so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

  • Sainsbury's cheepo curry sauce is only 4p a largish jar, fine for chutney or pickles not so good for jams!
