To remove a program permanently Start control Panel Add/Remove programs
to just remove from system tray you can only hide them, Right click Taskbar, properties, Taskbar tab, Customize, Always Hide.

It not the fact that hey are showing on the system tray that is the problem - they will be using just as much processing power even if the icons aren't there.

    What Windows are you using?

I am using w/ XP and I realise they are running in the background. I would like to stop them if I can. So if I want to run the progs, I can just access them the normal way. Does that sound realistc??

Well you can stop them at start up if thats what you mean, Start, Run, Type msconfig, startup tab and take out what you dont want to run at start up but be careful you dont stop something you need like a firewall or antivirus.

Also, if you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then choose task manager, then "processes", you can see the processes running in the background. However, in XP it would not be wise to ask you to post them as there are so many! I have 53, and this is a recent clean install.

Its the time my computer takes to load up, on start up I would like to speed up I am assuming the more "stuff" you have on the system tray the longer it takes to start up. I have begun to remove games I have loaded on computer, that I didnt realise I had on I may add. So any other advice would be gladly accepted.
  • If you are not sure of what to stop then try a program I use when too many programs run at start up, its completely free.

    Just go to http://www.windowsstartup.com/

Then look for the start up inspector, what you do is download the program then consult the database and it tells you what to stop and what not to stop.

Well I am getting there, cone thrumsconfig. I will now try to just untick one at a time, and hope I dont go over the edge. Obviously I am trying not to stop any system programs to run. That looks like an intereting program to Freebyman, I will give that a dose of looking at too. Thanks for all your help guys.

Sounds more like spyware to me, a good delousing with adaware & spybot is needed. Might also be a good idea to find out what programs your firewall is blocking and remove the ones you don't recognize.

BTW if you do the ctrl+alt+del & click on processes you can sort them in CPU or memory usage by clicking the title of the column. That should tell you which, if any, of your programs are hogging memory or CPU.
