Beds / Mattresses - confused???

Hi

we are in the market for a new bed and mattress and having read numerous threads and posts on here we popped into Heli-Beds, Bensons and Dreams this afternoon.

We stuck to trying pocket sprung / memory foam mattresses only and my wife has fallen in love with a mattress from Heli-Beds.

My question is this; do any / all of the above 3 shops have anyone manufacture mattresses for them (and if so who and are they any good?) as Heli-Beds state that they only sell their own brand and Dreams seem to sell others but were pushing their own brands on us.

Also, we currently have a 4 drawer divan base (which has seen better days) - should we look at getting both a base and mattress at the same time (from a cost point of view) - the base that the mattress was on (in Heli-Beds) was a wooden 4 poster with slats (although the salesman did state that he wouldn't recommend this type of base with the ps / mf mattress - it was purely a case of putting a mattress on a bed frame in the showroom! ).

I am currently about to look at 9 different online sites (not Bensons or Dreams - sites I have gleaned fron mse) but it might be difficult to compare if Heli do manufacture their own mattresses.

Also any ideas on approx what we should be paying for either a mattress on it's own or with a 4 drawer base - the one my wife loves from Heli was £550 (mattress only) - don't know if that is good or not - seems pricey (but then I am a tight-a*** ).

I would appreciate any thoughts on this situation.
Sometimes I wonder...
"why is that frisbee getting bigger?"
...and then it hits me

    Hi

All three have beds made for them, and I know that Dreams and Bensons get some of the large manufacturers to also make some for them. However I usually warn to stay away from these exclusive beds, as they are often made to a lower spec than other beds that they compare them to. They also give price promises, but you can't buy them elswhere, so they can charge what they like.
Also, we currently have a 4 drawer divan base (which has seen better days) - should we look at getting both a base and mattress at the same time (from a cost point of view) - the base that the mattress was on (in Heli-Beds) was a wooden 4 poster with slats (although the salesman did state that he wouldn't recommend this type of base with the ps / mf mattress - it was purely a case of putting a mattress on a bed frame in the showroom! ).

If your divan is worn out or it is starting to sag or look tatty, then it would be better to buy a divan set (base and mattress).

It all depends on the spec of the mattress. For that price you should be able to get propper pocket springs (not the cheaper and smaller foam encapsulated type), with memory foam on both sides. As for the price for the complete divan set, there is a huge variety of base options available, so it depends what you are after.

Oh boy, ANOTHER mattress thread ;)

Good work Tim, do you actually do any work or just post in here?! LOL :D

OP: For what it's worth, sounds like you're being ripped off at £550 for just the mattress. After my silentnight one had given up (after only 2years!) I have been researching makes and materials etc. You can get a good pocket sprung, damask cover or memory foam mattress for £300-400. Well done on asking here first though, we've seen too many guys who've 'just bought a mattress but dont like it', or similarly paid through the nose :(

Ask away once you've found what you want, you'll get more help here than in the showrooms of most stores...

  • Okay

have done some research on the net and have found the following potential mattresses / divan sets:

    La Romantica Venice

    La Romantica Madrid

Kozeesleep (can't remember the model name)

Calypso (might be the same as the La Romantica's)

We have just checked with Heli-Beds and the mattress my wife loves was a medium (firmness) 2 - 2 1/2" mf with pocket springs, x stitch handles, air vents, non removeable cover with hand tufted bits (sorry - forgot how he put it!!!)

I would appreciate any / all thoughts on the above.

Also, any other recomendations would be much appreciated as I don't really want to spend much over £500 (including divan base - 4 drawer ideally) if at all possible but will if I have to:mad:

  • Hi

can anyone explain the difference between 'Platform Set' and 'Sprung Edge' in relation to divan set drawers?

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave.

I've copied this from the guide I left on ebay (easier than re-typing it):

We often get asked what is the difference between a sprung edge base and a platform top base. Well there are actually three main types of divan base including a 'firm edge' base, but these aren't as common as the other two:
    Platform Top Divan Base
The base has a hard top. This type of base is the cheapest, and will give a firmer feel than the other types of divan base.

    Sprung Edge Divan Base
This type of base has a layer of springs on top of the base that go right to the edge giving the base a softer, more sumptuous feel.

    Firm Edge Divan Base
This type of base is more expensive to produce than the other two types, so some manufacturers will charge more for this option. This base gives a similar feel to the sprung edge base whilst providing extra support around the edge of the mattress. This type of base is ideal for people who are prone to rolling out of bed.
