All washing machines, regardless of price, do the same things. ie swish the clothes about in water, then spin the water out. More expensive machines tend to have more gadgety features and wash programmes. Personally I only ever use two or three different programmes, so only ever buy cheapish machines. I've had three in twenty years. The one I have at the moment is a Hotpoint Aquarius, was £299 a couple of years ago and is absolutely fantastic.

I've had four babies and washable nappies and been through several washing machines. My latest is a Miele and it's the best I've ever had. The worst one I had ate clothes - they'd come out ripped. Others had minor niggles - water trapped in the seal, always having to replace carbon brushes, the band slipping - that developed after a year or two. Am hoping I won't have that with this one. I also like the way it doesn't have lots of programmes - you choose the temp and spin speed and press start.
  • The gadget show last night did a comparison on 3 machines, i cant remeber the actual models but one was LG, On was the Monn & another! They varied in price from £299 mark - £800. they tested the was power & cost per wash. was quite good anthea turner did the testing. i cant find the actual site but this gives an idea. Im sure if you find the site it will tell all!!

I just bought the LG one myself, and it is brillant! definitely the best washing machine I have ever had, maybe a little bit pricey but worth every penny! I had a Bosch before and the LG is definetly better at cleaning!

I use persil colour and persil non bio, depending on what I am washing! i usually wash non cottons/non colurfast at 40 and sheets, towels, etc at 60. I also use Lenor.
  • I have a really pricey one (Miele) and it is great. I bought it for reliability, quietness (I live in an open-plan flat) and the fact that I needed a combined washer/dryer and the Miele was the only one on the market which was A rated.

John Lewis branded appliances (which somebody mentioned above) are made in the AEG Electrolux factory - or at least that's what the JL assistant told me when I bought my dishwasher :)

  • I have an old hotpoint (10 years) was the cheapest in the shop at the time. Washes great and have only had to spend £100 in repairs in 10 years. Repair man says its a great machine. Basic so easy and cheap to fix.

  • I do heaps of washing, 2-3 loads each day at least. I fid I have to replace washig machines every 2 or 3 years, the cheaper ones often last slightly longer. I also go to a shop where they have seconds, slightly dented on the sides, and this can make them even cheaper

We had a Candy washer/drier for 8 years before it gave up the ghost - I think we paid about £229 for it. We replaced it with a Bosch (washing only) last year and have found it works really well - I asked for recommendations on UK Whitegoods and this is what they suggested. Well, either that or Miele - but we'd just replaced the dishwasher with a Miele (after the Zanussi caught fire....!), so couldn't afford to do the same with the washing machine. The Bosch cost around £279 - it's a basic model, but we tend only to use one or two programmes so not worth spending loads extra for something we will probably not use.

I had a Bosch classix range washer. Fantastic machine. I've currently got a hotpoint aquarius (the Bosch got trashed during the flooding and they were out of stock everywhere :( ) Hotpoint aquarius gives a good wash, and wasn't especially expensive, but it's got a leak after only a year of use, which is a pain. The Bosch was going for three years without a hitch (and I run it at least three times daily). I am a sucker for wash powder though - I love ariel as it's the only thing that seems to get clothes clean in our hard water. Ariel powder came recommended to me by engineers (maybe they get a bonus LOL? ). Liquids trash your washer apparently - they leave a residue which eats through the parts according to one repair man.
