Does a £229 washing machine wash as good as a £599 one?

Does a £229 washing machine wash as good as a £599 one? Or is it the wash powder that gets results or temperature? Is a cheap brand wash powder any different to a brand name product?

Are you happy with your wash? what product do you use to wash with? what machine and what temperature?
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

  • Hi,

I only buy cheap washing machines. My current one is a Beko, bought for £130 approximately 4+ years ago from Argos, also took part-time Xmas work so I could get an extra 10% off:D . The washing machine is never off, some days two washes. I use anything that's on special - Daz, Aeriel etc also washing soda. Usual setting is 40 degrees, has two spin options, always use the heavy spin. Occassionally do a boil wash - 90 degrees. My machine is a workhorse, not pretty with lots of knobs, just washes my clothes.

PS To me £229 is a dear washing machine:eek:

wachine machines are like any mass produced goods these days, they are full of similar components. Taking out extra warrenty doesn't cost a bomb these days, so it's worth buying a medium priced washine machine and then taking out further warrenty on it.
  • We bought a Hotpoint Aquarius at least 8 years ago for a few hundred pounds and it still runs like a dream. It's had a set of brushes and the seal has been replaced but as it doesn't have any computery bits, there isn't much to go wrong. If it did die completely (and I see many years of faithful service ahead) then I would go for a very basic model as long as bits were available should anything go wrong.

I use Daz and Fairy and a splash of either vinegar or Asda fabric conditioner and everything comes clean on a 40 degree wash.
  • I bought a Miele £600 washing machine for £275 on the comet auction site, new with 10 year guarante, etc. They are built to last a min. of 20 years but I hear they can go for a lot longer.

It washes far better than anything else I've had in the last 15 years, which includes Bosch, Whirlpool, Hoover and Hotpoint. I won't say every £599 machine washes better than every £229 one, but I will say Miele's are excellent at any price.

i bought a £299 Hoover washer/dryer from Comet online last month. it got about 100 10/10 reviews, and i managed to get a 10% online discount.

i am in love with it. it has about 30 combinations of programs, and one of the reviewers had the previous model and said it lasted 20 years... mine has a standard 5 year warranty which is nice as well.

i got a second hand practically new hotpoint aquarius off ebay ( dont forget your nectarpoints when ebaying!) and its brilliant. I wanted 2nd hand as I feel we all buy far too many new apliacnes when theres scores of useable 2nd hand ones out there, save the world :T Hotpoint is a good one to get second hand as parts are ten a penny should I need to fix it. But weve had 6 months out of it so far, and no probs.

40 quid I paid and it was barely used. We give it a bitof a hammering as I have a bit of a washing ahem obsession, and its used at least daily if not 3-5 times a day.

I use bog standard tescos own tablets colour ones, only use one per wash not the 2 they tell you to, and its perfectly fine.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I've had a John Lewis own brand one for 3 years or so and I love it, I think it was around £299 at the time, so mid-range maybe.
A repair man once told me (when he was fixing my 20 year old hotpoint) a few years ago that machines with slower spin speeds will last longer than the super fast ones and also to leave at least 30 mins between washes to allow the machine to cool down. I do a lot of washes too and I do try to leave a bit of time between goes esp on my busy days.

I am with you on this one, Miele products are built to last which is why they carry a hefty price tag. If anyone ever asks on UK Whitegoods forums Miele are always recommended by the engineers as being the brand that have the least problems. Apparently Liebherr are made in the same factory as Miele so are also very good but not as expensive.

We bought a £299 Indesit and it is utter pap, the door rusted, the powder drawer doesn't empty properly and the capacity is rubbish so when we replace it I will definately get a Miele. Its too much of a lottery buying Hotpoint, Hoover, Zanussi et al because they are all owned by the same parent companys. John Lewis/AEG/Zanussi are all rebadged Electrolux products just as Hoover is rebadged Candy (my last WM was Candy and lasted less than 3 years) so they are all pretty similar components.

I think we have just been unlucky but every time we buy something cheap it fails prematurely
