Home Contents Insurance: Sensible Guesstiamte of contents value

Hi all,

This is my first post so please be nice :)

My insurance or rather our insurance is coming up for renewal. Looking around the flat, we feel that, if we came home one evening and the flat was gone due to a gas explosion, we would lose everything, including bespoke furniture, plasma, projector, camera, clothing, dinner service etc.

So doing some quick sums a figure of about £90,000 to £100,00 is realistic

But no one seems to want to ensure that amount. A flat roof is not helping either

So I am looking for advice on what should I put down? I don't want to lose out!

The flat i a 1966 purpose ex-council designed property with substantial walls. The building has restricted access, and the front door has a 5 lever mortice lock as well as a Yale lock. I do not have a burglar alarm.

Can any one suggest a decent company who I can get quotes from. I am currently with Zurich (Formerly Eagle Star)

Any advice, comments most appreciated.

Adrian

With that sort of sum insured, you probably need one of the specialist policies aimed at the mid net worth market. Zurich have a suitable contract, as do the likes of Hiscox, Norwich Union and Chubb but these tend to be offered via the broker distribution channels as cover needs to be tailored to individual needs. Find a good broker who will get you sorted out.

    Hiscox do online sales.

Definately in the mid-net worth category. The likes of NU, More Than, Churchill etc are designed around the 3 bedroom det market with around £50k contents.

I have a Hiscox 505 policy. Price wise the cost is in line with my old More Than policy but with a higher excess - £250 instead of £100. Their service standards are far higher than the MT though and have a very good reputation within the industry.

    Thanks for your replies...

Zurich basically do not want my custom, been on the phone several times. They are prepared to insure me but at a premium.

Called Greenbree (John Lewis) and very helpfull, with a no maximum policy and half the price of Zurich at about £300.

Will try and find a decent broker in Finchley/Barnet. Any suggestions?
