I ave just received an old computer which i have been wanting to repair to give to my little brother.
I have reformated the hard drive and reinstalled xp onto the harddrive, it loads up fine when i ave it in my computer but when i transfered it back to the older computer it starts to load up but when it comes to load up the windows there is just a white line accross the bottom of the screen.
Does anyone know how to sort this out?
Thanks

You say you installed the operating system on your computer before moving the hard drive? It sounds like either the BIOS doesn't know where the Operating System is stored, or that the right device driver (bit of software that makes a bit of hardware work) isn't there because you installed it on a different computer.
Try installing windows on the computer you want to actually use it on. Should be fine...0 -
I would try that but the cd drive in the old computer doesn't seem to be working, neither does putting one of my working drives in or connecting my usb drive:-S0

suspect possibly a motherboard fault ??
try removing the Bios battery from the motherboard and then letting if find evrything againEx forum ambassador

Sounds like you need to get a working CD drive in the older machine, make sure the hard drive with the current (not working) install is plugged in and working, and boot into the Windows CD and perform a repair install (or a complete fresh install.)
Swapping a hard drive with an XP install from one machine to another rarely works, and if it does, rarely well.
The drivers for each motherboard have to be set up properly at install time, or with a repair install.Russia is HERE0 -
