10 bank charges in 1 month

also, re the recent/current bank charges case - have they not just made an interim decision that any charges causing financial hardship have to be refunded?
you could find some more info on that on this site and then quote that to them. i always go into my branch, even if you have to phone them you can use the branch phone and use the staff's help too if it all gets too much.
if you still have a complaint/ are not happy, then again the branch can put (and trace) a complaint through for you.
good luck x0 -
Hi,
I have already posted about having 10 bank charges applied to my Bank of Scotland account this month, (this has been reduced to 5). These charges were not for DD payments, but for when I used my card online.
Can anyone advise exactly how a debit card should work?
I always assumed that if there were not enough funds then any card transaction would be declined, my friend has a Halifax debit card and says that hers would definitely be declined.
Am I wrong in thinking that BOS & Halifax were now one?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated, also if anyone knows the phone number for customer relations please, as I only have an 08457 no. and could not even get to speak to a supervisor.
from my experience debit card payments can be held for up to 6 months, this said you could have money in your account for the first payment to come out and even up to the 100th card payment but the next day a dd comes out and suddenly you dont have the money to cover the costs of your card payments which with the banks being the     s that they are esp halifax who state in their terms you can be charged 3 x £35 a day plus a monthly charge of £28 for going over your overdraft.
so at the point of purchase the money was there but then something came out and thats why you are being charged.

no they haven't. the banks are under no obligation to refund you, financial hardship or not. What they do have to do is treat you fairly under the banking code and this can mean stopping interest and future charges, or moving you to a basic account. Some banks are refunding some money but it depends how dire the circumstances and which bank you are with. If you are in true Financial Difficulty then these measures really will help too.LegalBeagles0 -
with the debit card thing.....i work for the halifax and if you use your debit card for less than £10 / £15 (sorry i haven't been there long!) then the company who takes the money don't check if there is money in the account before they take it, they just take it there and then. hence how if you have say £3 in the account and no overdraft if you spend £4.99 you'll get a charge.0

I phoned B.O.S. and spoke to a very nice lady who has wiped all my (10) charges . I explained the length of time I had been a customer and my disappointment at the treatment & charges I received, considering it was my first time in the red (thanks Esmerellda x). I was angry but polite and admitted I had been foolish as I did not understand fully how my debit card works. I guess sometimes being nice works better than rage
Thanks to everyone for the advice, I am very grateful.0 -
Well done. Glad to hear that you managed to strike it lucky with the person you spoke to in Customer Services.Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0

wondering if anyone can help me Hsbc have been charging me £162 each month for going over my overdraft for the last 5 months if got my debt down from £1600 down to £250 but am about to receive yet another charge on Monday can I claim this back I rang them and they were about as much help as aconcrete parachute0

@adam245
It is easier to get the charge taken off by speaking to them before it goes on your account. How is it a £162 for each month though? Any DDs coming off. If so it would be worth opening a basic bank account and paying them from there.0 -
Well done marcb47 its good to hear a success story they're thin on the ground at the moment.0
