beware connection through directory enquiries

I have received my phone bill to discover that by getting a telephone number from them and getting them to put me through to the number has resulted in me being charged £58 for a call in this country (UK) which lasted 1 hour and 45 mins. So BEWARE - do NOT let directory enquiries put you through!!! A hard (and expensive) lesson learned by me but hopefully might prevent you guys against a similar mistake and HUGE shock to the system!
It was BT by the way - forgot to say that!

Thanks for this, but didn't the operator warn you that it would be more expensive if they connected the call than if you dialled it yourself? They should have done.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
Debt free success date: 14.8.2006 :j0 -
No she did not and when I phoned BT to complain, they didn't want to know. I said that in my opinion they should tell you but the person I spoke to couldn't have cared less. Needless to say I shall now use one of Martin's price comparison sites and MOVE ON (and away) from BT! Now know what BT stands for - bl**dy terrible0

why ring up when you can search directories on the BT web site for free ???

Better still, make a mental note of 0800 100 100 - free Directory Enquires (from a landline).
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/directory-enquiries-freeTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
