Investigating a Building Company...

What is the best way of finding out if a local small building company is properly registered (and insured !) - without asking them directly. And how concerned should I be if they're not ?

Cheers,
Mike.

All builders should carry insurance called professional indemnity insurance. It will depend on what work you are carrying out as to how important it will be if they are insured or not. Of course if you are getting a builder in to fit a wardrobe the effect of their insurance will be much less than if they are knocking out walls or fitting a new roof.

The only way that I know to find out would be to ask them upfront to produce their certificate, out of interest why are you adverse to asking?.
  • One way to find out about a company is to do a search of it and if vat reg'd should be easy. Try https://www.applegate.co.uk and try a search of the owner or the name of the firm.
If a firm works in constuction should work under the guide of master craftsmen ( sorts the wheat from the chaff!)
    Hope this helps
