Mrs Generali is an Aussie so I get a passport that way. I thought I had to steal a sheep or something.

Ask a Kiwi - absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with sheep stealing.;)
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I reckon we can live on AU$1k/week having done the sums. A mate that I worked with a couple of years back (who I am now pretty senior to) nets $1600/wk.

My Aussie friend's daughter pays A$200 per week for her apartment in Sydney. You can get cheaper apartments for $150 per week. Her gas and electric for that apartment is about $120 a month and her travel pass around the city, is $40 per week. She only has herself to keep.

My sister was paying $40 per term for each child for state school, but now sends them to private school. No NHS for the glasses her DD2 needed or for the brace her DD1 needed. Clothes are expensive. Knickers and socks are not made well (the elastic goes) and I send her parcels of M & S underwear, plus chocolate and twiglets:D
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

    - A reasonable sized house in an area where the family can be safe.
    - A short commute
    - To work a maximum of 50 hours/week.
    - To be able to afford good fresh ingredients to prepare meals with
    - To be able to go cycling relatively easily
    - A decent education for the kids
    - To be able to enjoy myself with the family on the weekend (eg go to the beach/play sports/have picnics)
    - To have a nice holiday once a year
    - To be able to afford a hobby

That's what I had where I bought my two children up, in Yorkshire. I missed London too much, so I moved home when they finished their education

Weak economic conditions certainly aren't going to help re-inflate the bubble any time soon.

UK economic growth ground to a halt between April and June, according to the latest official data.
The Office for National Statistics said economic growth was unchanged in the second quarter from the first, revising an earlier estimate of 0.2% growth.
It ends a run of 63 consecutive quarters of growth in the UK and is the weakest data since 1992.
The figures are likely to raise expectations of a cut in interest rates to prevent a protracted slowdown.
The services sector, the backbone of the UK economy, grew just 0.2%, while manufacturing output fell by 0.8%.

Yes, the phoney war is over and things are just starting to get bad.

Hmmm, is that going to be a good thing or a bad thing for the direction of house prices? (depends on what you consider good or bad I suppose :D)

All I can say is don't hold your breath for the spring bounce of '09, housing bulls.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

We were thinking about renting a 2 bed flat in somewhere like Abbotsford - Inner West. $500 would get a 2 bed flat with parking near/on the harbour.

In terms of house prices most people 'in the street' seem to think to think that we're looking at a 6-12 months dip. It seems 1990 has been forgotten and that recovery cycles are more likely to be 5+ years.

It is interesting that the quote on UK Average House Prices on the spreads have shown the same pattern for some time now with today's quotes being (Feb this year was 196.0):

    Qtr 3 2008 (Jul-Sep) 174.5 - 175.0

    Qtr 4 2008 (Oct-Dec) 165.5 - 167.0

    Qtr 1 2009 (Jan-Mar) 153.0 - 159.5

    Qtr 2 2009 (Apr-Jun) 149.0 - 154.0

    Qtr 4 2009 (Oct-Dec) 145.0 - 148.0

    Qtr 4 2010 (Oct-Dec) 139.0 - 142.0

    Qtr 4 2011 (Oct-Dec) 136.0 - 137.0

Anyone who really thinks we are only going to see a minor blip can make a fortune on the spreads - Just buy that 2011 price. However, I won't be following them....

No as far as I know you could go as low as £1 per point. Those quotes are from Spreadfair, part of Cantor.
