I know when my son was at universtity in the USA, he rang home using a phone card he bought in the local store and it was cheap. He did it through his US mobile. This might be worth investigating.

you can get a $5 phone card from any 7/11 store or corner shop type place , 99% of hotels allow you to use these to call home

$5 will get you several decent phone calls home
  • There are loads of different phone cards in US - we always use one - you can get a decent number of mobile minutes for about $10 but a lot more landline minutes for the same money. You can get them at garages, supermarkets, tourist shops, Walmart, Publix. Florida is an easy place to get them.

Be careful which one you buy and read the card properly before you buy - you might see 500 minutes for $5 but they will be within the US and Canada, somewhere else on the card it will tell you the international minutes. So look and compare.

We take our mobiles - is yours a tri band, if not it won't work - but only to contact us in an emergancy. The cost of receiving calls is prohibitive too.
    This includes voicemail.

oh and never buy a phone card of a holiday rep if your going on a package deal...they sell $10 ones but have a lousey amount of minutes
  • My hubby used to be on t-mobile and when we were in the states last new year it was 40p to text or 5p to send a picture

So he sent everyone at home a piccie with a few words on it instead of a text!

    From the Roaming article..

Using T-mobile in Europe? Don't text, MMS!

Rather bizarrely, if you send a picture message (MMS) when in one of T-Mobiles Region 2 countries (most of Europe) it costs 20p, whereas texting is 40p. Thus, if you want to text home simply send an MMS instead; don't worry if you haven't got a picture to send, just put the words in the message without one and it still works fine (more info at T-Mobile MMS loophole).
