Usually yes, but depends where your modem is. Is it a little box that plugs into your PC or is it built into your PC?
If you are on dial-up and the lead from your PC goes straight to your phone socket then the modem is inside your PC. Look for a similar socket on your laptop, if it has one then just swop leads. If not you will need to get an external modem, which can be got for a fiver upwards, a USB one is the easiest, just plugs into the USB on the laptop.
If the modem is external then swop the lead from your pc so the same socket on you laptop. the same applies to Broadband as the modem will be external and either uses the USB or Ethernet socket (similar but larger than the phone socket). You will have to configure the laptop in the same way as you did your PC to work with the modem.

From what you say it sounds like you're all set. You already have a wireless broadband router/modem which your laptop will be able to connect to wirelessly and therefore you can use the internet at the same time as your desktop PC. Just tell us the make and model of your broadband modem/router to confirm my theory.magoogy wrote:my desktop is in corner of my room - im on telewest broadband using an ethernet or something....it is wireless.....i havent actually got the laptop yet but it going to be a toshiba with wireless connected in it.....

to tell you the truth i dont know what make or anything it is - im not using any box/cable or anything - the guy tried setting me up with an ethernet or something but it wouldnt work so he then used a disc and another hardware thingy - but, he found he didnt need the hardware - he just installed it via disc through my set top box (telewest digital).....bit thick really as i dont know what is what but thanks for your help0

step by step
1) if there is no wire between your pc and your telewest box then you are wireless
2) if your laptop has a wireless capability then you can connect
3) if your laptop doesn't have wireless built in then you need a usb wireless adapter - they all work but some will work a bit faster than others, which one depends on your box
If you have 2 or 3 sorted then your laptop should see the box - it then depends on what security is installed whether it can see the internet or notTANSTAAFL !0
