GCSE Re-sit question

DS2 got his results today & he's pleased to have passed 7 GCSE's but has failed his maths ( he got a D), does anyone know how he goes about re-sitting this exam & will he have to pay?

TIA

    Is he staying at school?

Normally you would resit through the school. Whether you have to pay depends on the school policy.

If he was moving to a sixth form college, they may offer resits as part of his course and that would more than likely be free.

  • He's going on to sixth form college to do a BTEC course in IT.

You could contact the sixth form college to see whether they do resits? Or maybe he could do it through his old school.

Most colleges will allow students to resit Maths and/or English alongside their full time course although they might have to pay extra for this. I hope that his course offer wasn't provisional on passing the Maths.

    So do I!

I know his course offer was provisional on him passing 5 GCSE's but cannot remember if they stipulated maths as one of the five. I'll ring the college tomorrow & ask them.

    Thanks for the replies!

If they say including math's you can get away with him getting on the course it's just they will make him re-sit it while doing the course. No idea about BTEC though but my sixth form were pretty slack on what you should get. I'm sure you'll be fine though ^^

That's not necessarily the case; it depends on many factors. A popular course with high standards may well insist on it. You can't normally go far in IT without a decent standard in Maths anyway.

I thought a d was a pass still, just obviously a lower pass the only time they fail is a u.
  • I did not do it in the end, but I was accepted into BTEC IT, and I only had an E in Maths! so I don't think it is too imporant, but could depend on the college though.

I think employers like to see a C in English and Maths at GCSE. My brother at college is being made to resit Maths every year because he has yet to get a C (he got a D in actual GCSEs, resit it last year, still got a D, and has retaken it this year, awaiting his result in post).

    Every place is different though.
