i have a 4 yr old retreiver as well 2 years ago she started to lose her coat had painfull lesions the vet put her on steroids+a 6 week coarse of anti-biotics daily baths with werberac shampoo a streroid cream called fusiderm also antihistamines (tried various) managed to clear up her skin and fur and reduce itching but not cure it we then had blood tests done found out she was allergic to 7 different grasses dustmites and house mites had a serum called immunotherapy made up for her gave her a coarse of injections at home she's just coming up to 6 months on those and it has been unaffective now we are hitting the highest part of the pollen season she is back to square one cotex supplement (contains essential oils including primrose oil) does help slightly but so far have not found a remedy sorry to give you a negative response but some of the things i've mentioned may be of some help p.s. also tried an alternative remedy i had to have sent from states with no effect

One of our cats has a grass pollen allergy. Whilst steroids help, he's only a few years old and continued doses would eventually be harmful to him. So we are now giving him immunotherapy injections. He needs them weekly for 12 weeks, then after 2 weeks, then after 3 weeks, then it should be once ever 4 weeks. He's onto the mid-strength serum, out of 3.

Do you mind me asking how long it took for these injections to start helping your Lab? Obviously, everyone's different and it may take longer for some than for others for it to take effect, but I'd be interested to know.

He's had his 7 injections so far, and the vet informed us that the earliest we may possibly see an improvement would be after 5 injections. Nothing yet, though.

He still has to wear his vet collar and is still having the occasional, frantic session at attempting to scratch at his ears. So it's obviously not time to remove it yet.

I suppose it doesn't help that the pollen levels are probably pretty bad at this time of year.

I do hope it works. I feel so sorry for him as he's had to wear that collar for months now.

My sympathy goes out to you and your Lab, and to all of the other animals affected by this.

One thing you could try is local honey, it must from within 5 miles of your house. My friend is trying it on her Bichon, she said its early days yet but the signs are looking good.
Its also good for humans with allergies.

chris, I looked into this but apparently normal honey - even local - isnt what you should have its the actual pollen stuff the bees collect before the honey production. I was hoping it would help one of my sons who is asthmatic.
