Disappointing GCSE results :(

Well my daughter has today (On her 16th birthday) got her GCSE results and they are not quite what she needs to get onto the college course she had in mind.
She needed 4 A-C grades, she got
C x 3
D x 4
E x 3
My sister only got 2 C's when she needed 4 many years ago and she still got on the course she wanted, so is there any hope that my daughter might still get on hers? Its not like she was a million miles out
Enrolement is next Tuesday and we have our fingers crossed.
If not she will have to do a foundation year (uniformed public services to help get her into the police) they will take her with at least 4 D-G grades but her tutors told her she would be best doing the higher leval course pending her results which were predicted to be slightly better.
Thanks

Colleges are still like that these days - they will still accept people even if they dont get the grades. I got my GCSE's 3 years ago and my mates didnt get their grades but they were still in the same class as me at college when i got all above C's.. Dont give up!xXx0

She can but discuss it with the college. My SD got appauling results last year - she shouldn't have bothered, but it did kick her butt into gear and has come away from college with a merit on her first years course.
Once your daughter has discussed with the college then things will be a bit clearer for her and there should be no problems hopefully - she barely missed the mark.0 -
Thanks.#
It sounds like she still might get in, I'd just hate for her to get her hopes up!

Usually there is someone available at the college around the published time of exam results to answer queries like yours; meaning you needn't wait until the enrollment day to try and find out. I would be tempted to phone the college either today or tomorrow am and speak to a tutor.0

what sucjects did she get her c's in generally as long as she got her maths and english they will let her in.
They may well let her on but say she needs to attend night school to get the rest of grades needed.
I had to do this to get on my btec many years ago as i didn't get a c in maths.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
if her aim is to get into the police force, she doesnt actually need any specific qualifications or college courses. So all is not lost. Her best bet on top of what ever college course she manages to get on to,( sorry have no idea how that works!) is to get some life experience working with the public, different parts of the community etc - Voluntary work is always good, They look more at your life skills during the police recruitment process - team work / communication skills / personal responsibility/ respect for race & diversity etc, although you do also have to have a reasonable ability in both written /spoken english / maths.
As im sure you are aware she can join from when she is 18 1/2, although very few seem to get in at that age - they generally get told to get some life experience and come back in a few years -the current application process is pretty tough!
I know of two people who are both 21 and have 18months in the job, whilst they both love it, they both say they wished they had joined when they were at least 5 years older, as it really does take over your life - its by no means a 'job' more of a way of life !!
Sorry im going off on a tangent, guess im trying to say if she cant get on the course she wants , it wont stop her progressing with her career choice, and all is not lost !
Having said all that, I hope she gets onto the course she wants and I wish her luck !!0 -
Thanks so much for all the advice.
She got one of her Cs in English so thats good, but only E in maths which is not so good.
I think although not nessasary, that this course - whether she does the foundation year or just the two years will really help her to gain some insight into the job and what it entails and its a very much "hands on" and physical course, not just all theory.
I think you are right, Lisssa that 18.5 years old is too young to join up, I hope that she will do other things after this course to help to prepare her for this career should she still want to.
Thanks again

it depends on the course she wants to study. When I went to college I did a BTEC in health studies and there were people who had failed english and maths but were accepted because they had passed science. They had to resit Maths and english GCSE's in their first year but that was it.0

It really won't be the end of the world if she has to do the foundation year. Very few people get into the police at the minimum age anyway and it might be just the kick up the wotsit that she needs if she doesn't get on the BTEC straightaway. Whatever happens, make sure that she resits her Maths until she gets her C grade. It isn't a requirement for the police but it is for many other careers and HE courses.0
