Just wondering how much it costs to drive about 50 miles a day?
Hi,
Just wondering how much it costs (petrol) to drive about 40-50 miles a day?
I have just started driving to work and i drive a nissan almera. i drive through uphill country lanes (scared of motorway) and i just feel like i'm paying a lot of money for petrol (unleaded). Spent 20 quid on petrol in two days...is that too much?
thanks

Assume 33 mpg
Assume 87.9p/ltr
1 gallon = 4.546 ltrs
50 miles = 1.5 gallons = 1.5 x 4.546 x 0.879 = £5.99 (or 12p/mile)
Edited to add a motorway journey:
Assume 40 mpg
Assume 87.9p/ltr
1 gallon = 4.546 ltrs
50 miles = 1.25 gallons = 1.25 x 4.546 x 0.879 = £4.99 (or 10p/mile)0 -
i drive 75 miles (return trip) every day,
i drive a 11 year old ford fiesta,
mainly dual carriage way + motorway
my car takes £33 (current price of 89.9)
I can get 320 miles from a tank of petrol, so fuel costs are in the region of 10p per mile
75 miles x 10p = £7.50 per day........ coach ticket is £6.50 per day, train ticket is much more plus 4 mile round trip to get to itsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I used to drive 45miles to work and then the same in return. Total 90miles.
Cost approx £10 a day (£50 per week)
Then I got my car converted to lpg and this saves a little though the inital cost of the conversion means no savings for the 1st year or so.
If you have a diesel motor you could expect better running costs than a petrol but savings not so high as with Lpg.Wealthsaving - a way of life?0 -
To the OP, sounds like you're only getting around 20mpg, which is very low for a small hatch (really should be getting coming on for double that).
Unless you mean 40-50 miles there then 40-50 back, in which case your figures are bang on what I would expect for an Almera
If not, take the car in to be looked at.0 -
What do we win if we get the answer right.... lol0

The Inland Revenue allow 42p/mile as running cost amount you can clam, without paying tax on it, if you use your car for business use.
& thats WHATEVER make or model.
REAL costs are more than £1/mile, I'd guess, when you consider everything else involved!!

vansboy, HMRC website says 40p/mile. I get paid 40p/mile. Please tell me how I can get the extra 2p/mile.vansboy wrote:The Inland Revenue allow 42p/mile as running cost amount you can clam, without paying tax on it, if you use your car for business use.

I know you "guessed" at £1/mile, but you're way out. From the Audi website, some research from 'CAP Monitor' & 'Fleet News'...
"CAP Monitor, the guide to future residual values, quotes a three-year/60,000-mile residual value forecast of £10,175 or 41% of cost new for our A4 2.5 TDI quattro Sport.
That tallies with a Fleet News running cost figure of 37.16 pence per mile over the same parameters - a total of £22,296 - not bad for a car listing at £25,295 on-the-road."
I would have thought your typical family car would be no more than 30p/mile.0 -
I can do 260 miles on £15.00 deisel in my V reg Vauxhall Corsa 1.7.
I think that's quite good, isn't it????:j0 -

Fill your tank to the top of the filler pipe and make a note of your mileage.
After a few days re-fill the tank to the same point and note down the quantity of petrol needed to re-fill and also your mileage again.
Calculate your actual MPG by multiplying the litres by 0.22 to get gallons and divide the actual mileage travelled by the number of gallons used.
When you know what your actual consumption is, you can then decide if you have a problem.
