stphnstevey is right - contracted in (default) rate is charged at 11% on earnings above £453 per month (the earnings threshold), and 1% on any earnings above £3,337 per month (the upper earnings limit).

    Example
    Earnings: £3,400 per month
    £453 below earning threshold @ 0% = £0
    £3,337 - £453 = £2,884 between earnings threshold and UEL @ 11% = £317.24
    £3,400 - £3,337 = £63 above UEL @ 1% = £0.63
Total Class 1 Primary contributions due = £317.87

Thanks for clearing that up - I think.

    From this HMRC page
, I was working off the Primary Threshold for 2008-2009 being the minimem level of earnings that you need to get NI credits - have I misunderstood it ? £105 per week, £5460 per year, £455 per month..
So, pay yourself than £454 per less per month and get no NI credits, pay yourself over £455 per month and get NI credits.

  • I did payroll for 2 people and I used 12Pay, it's free for the basic package and you can print off payslips. It's £48 for a year subscription but as I'm now down to 1 employee who gets £30 per week and therefore no NI or PAYE I haven't paid for the premium package.

I found it really easy to use so thought I'd let you know about it in case it might help.

With more employees I suspect the premium package would be better as it can do holidays as well as the rest (I think). It's worth taking a look at anyway.
    August 08 debt £58544.84, Paid £1668, Dec 08 Total £58236.48
DMP with CCCS £417 per month - Starting 01 Sept 08
Increased to £443 per month Jan 09.
  • I wouldn't touch Sage products with a barge pole - believe me I have plenty of experience with both the products and the people who work there.

If your after free Payroll software have a look at 12pay.co.uk. We've used them for some time and their support is great. Alternatively you could try thepayrollsite.co.uk which is web based service that costs about £5 per month.

If it's just one or two people, doesn't the HMRC free CD allow you to do everything now, updates free as well! Think it does payslips as well
