18 year old sigining on before uni starts?

I get child benefit for my son but this stops first monday in September. He has been working off and on during the Summer but won't have any work in September. His uni course doesn't start until the end of September. Can he get JSA for a few weeks? Is it worth the hassle?

  • Well he isn't actually seeking a job is he? Therefore sponging off the taxpayer. Scam.

Wrong, he would, be and is, seeking a job for the time he was claiming. He has been working over the Summer but the work has finished and there is nothing in the offing.

  • He won't be a full time student until the academic year starts and so there is no reason why he can't sign on for a couple of weeks in September, as long as he meets the JSA conditions ie available for and actively seeking work.

Only you and him can decide if it is worth the "hassle" but it is £47.95 per week.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."
  • Seeing as he isn't technically looking for a job as he is going to university, I doubt that he will be allowed to sign on. Anyway, why can't he look for something temporary for a week or two? Or just not work...

As long as he is seeking work then he can claim.
Some time ago now, but we were told that we were able to claim benefit for "freshers week" in our first year. Something to do with the course not actually starting that week but that we had to be there to register, etc.

Hopefully he'll get a new temp job in the meantime and won't need to.

you need to tell your older daughter to get a summer job next year then!! we've all had to do it to get by - bar work, waitressing, fast food place, supermarket tills, temping etc. often you have to get your CV in early as lots of students look in the summer, but with effort, it's hard not to find anything.
