Best boiler breakdown cover

......or something similar which will take care of any central heating problems.

British Gas have a Homecare plan and I've had leaflets for Servowarm and Thames Water.

Also have heard of Home emergency cover from various companies.

Anyone had any experience with any of the above and can advise me on things to look out for? Or can recommend any?

The boiler of my gas central heating is quite old (15 years) and has already started playing up a bit so I want to be prepared if anything drastic happens!

Thanks

  • Hello!
I've also been looking into boiler cover - some of the plans vary widely - and remember to read the small print, esp if your boiler is older. I found that when my boiler had a leak this year, it was very hard to get hold of a CORGI registered plumber. I was let down so many times I had to pay £170 for the boiler manufacturers to come and fix it. A lot - but worth it for good service.
    Anyway -
Norwich Union Direct do a very good deal for £13.95 per month - but the small print is a bit unclear, if you have the yearly free service, and at that point anything is found wrong with the boiler, you have to pay for it. I may be wrong but this seems a bit unfair. This would be something to phone up and ask about. On the more positive side, they give cashback for boiler replacement, but the older the boiler, the less they will pay.
Powergen also do a very good deal. They are charging £13 per month. I am currently a powergen customer and they are running a promotion giving the first three months for free. Their cover seems to be very good. I am not sure if this particular promo is just for Powergen customers only, but it is a freephone number so it's worth checking out. And I don't think you have to be a gas/electric customer to buy their heat insurance.
But it is all down to personal choice. My boiler is only 2years old but has had problems twice. So it seems safer to pay this insurance.
Finally....I have applied for the Powergen insurance, but is takes 30 days to come into effect - so perhaps sooner is best, rather than being left very cold! :D
    good luck!

The Powergen deal seems to be a good one.

I too am a powergen online dual fuel customer but when I just logged in to check out the deal, I couldn't see anything about the first three months being free.

Could you give me the freephone no you were talking about so I can check it's still running?
    Thanks

  • 2 of the ones you've listed are virtually identical and a 3rd one mentioned isn't too far different..
