BT 12 Month Contract

I have recently taken out a BT line in a new rental property and the BT contract says that it is a 12 month contract, however after the 12 month period the contract can be renewed for another 12 months, this seems to allow BT to charge for the remainder of any contract if you want finish the contract early.....
...I can understand that for the first 12 months this is fair, but if you stay with BT for a number of years and then want to leave it is a little bit cheeky to charge your loyal customers for not being able to predict the future. Is this legal, it is certainly poor customer service?

After 12 months unless you change something with them you are then only on a rolling month contract.0

It does remain a rolling 12 month contract if you want to have a free (or reduced) call plan included with the rental.0

The line rental contract is subject to a 12 month minimum term, cancellation fee £70.However their is no requirement for you to take a 12 month rolling contract for your calls if you dont want to.0

hi,
does anyoneknow - is there a way out of this 12 month contract??
My disabled father moved into shetered accomodation recently and he had the phone line activated wih the itention of using talktalk - unfortunately I found out he had contacted BT and talktalk so he has now received a large bill from BT for activating the line £40 then a couple of weeks later another bill for £130 for ending his 12 month contract early!!
being on a pension in sheltered accomodation he certainly cant afford this and didnt really know what that he was agreeing to a "verbal " contract when he rang them as he does sometimes get confused.
All BT had to say was that i should take it up with Talktalk ?? They simply werent interested - he has broken the contract ad thats that - the fact that he never even used the phone means nothing to them!!1 -
BT retail wouldn't be interested since they like all other providers of telephony services have to arrange installation of a new line via BT Openreach. There's no incentive for BT retail to arrange a new line for the customer then to jump ship to another provider - TalkTalk - who could arrange it themselves. That's why BT retail introduced minimum term contracts for line rental.
Legally your father is up against it but maybe an email to BT's CEO Ian Livingston might help.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
thanks... I have just emailed him.
I did forget to mention that my father had also called virgin media as well, he also received a large bill from them. I am happy to say that when i contacted virgin and explained the circumstances they cancelled the contract and bill immediately without argument. I just hope BT can be as understanding.0 -
They may well cancel the bill but will they let Talktalk have the line? If your father has the details for his talktalk account try the talktalk members forum and see what spin they put on it?

The BT Connection fee seems reasonable as without BT providing the line in the first place he could not have become a Talk Talk Customer,as Talk Talk although they can provide new lines dont and would rather cherry pick BT customers. Did Talk Talk tell him their would be a cancellation fee in the first place i wonder.Perhaps they would like to pick up the part of the tab for the cancellation.0
