RyanAir questions on baggage allowance.

Has anyone flown on RyanAir recently?

I’m going on a one day trip to Bournmouth next week and want to take my camera equipment. My bag is approximately, 360mm wide, 330mm deep and 480mm high. That exceeds the RyanAir baggage dimensions of 400mm wide, 200mm deep and 550mm high.

My bag is aircraft compliant because I’ve had it on a plane around 6 weeks ago returning from New York. Admittedly a bigger plane but the bag fits in the overhead bins.

Does anyone know how rigidly RyanAir stick to their size limits?
Should I risk it and take the chance of being turned away?
I won’t be putting it in the hold – it costs several times the cost of the ticket and the equipment I’m taking costs way too much to let it out of my sight.

I’d appreciate any thoughts.

    Your bag exceeds the stated maximum dimensions so Ryanair (or agents) would be quite within their rights to insist you check it in as hold luggage. However, as to whether you would be allowed to carry it through is anyones' guess I should think. It could quite well depend on the discretion of the person making this decision on the day.

    Do you have to take all of this equipment - could you not just take some of it in a smaller bag to be sure?

    No such thing as "aircraft compliant" bags - there are only bags that meet the requirements of the airline you are trying to use

    As for Ryanair - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't

    Oddly enough the size which ryanair will allow you as carry on is less than the dft rules,

    dft= 56x45x25
    ryanair = 55x40x20.

    therefore you could get through security with a bag and then get to the gate and be refused boarding because it does not comply with ryanairs rules.

    Im often suprised by the size of bags i see some ryanair passengers with however ive also seen heated arguments at boarding because people arent allowed with their bag which is a tad oversized. cant your bag crumple down or is it rigid?

    all the best

    The dft rules that phatbear refers to is what i meant by my bag being aircraft compliant.
    Given the value of my equipment (cost to replace with new would be over £5k) I wouldn't check it into the hold - i'd rather not fly. Especially since the ticket only cost me £2.42!!!!

    I've since been offered a smaller bag that i can take and it's already been on a RyanAir flight so i should be fine.
    The bag i have is fairly rigid to protect the contents and will not compress or crumple to fit a smaller space.
