Got a smallish living room (roughly 15 feet x 12 feet), TV would go into the corner, and be about 8 feet away from the settee.
About to subscribe to Sky and Skysports (long story but live in a conservation area and only just been given the OK to get planning permission for a dish! And before a smart Alec
asks about cable, it's not on our street!)
Anyway back to the story.
I think a 42" is well to big so will probably go for a 37" (unless people with similar size room can testify otherwise?)
Anyway, need a 37" 1080p HDTV, but also on a budget (less than £500, the less the better!
)
Any advice on which one please, have no games console and a crappy DVD player, the sport is the important thing, will look into adding Sky HD at a later stage but need to consider which set now.
Thanks all

Forget it if you're looking at sub £500. There's nothing really good at 37" and 1080p in that.
Don't bother for now. Save your money for a little longer. Look at Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and LG.0 -
Don't look at 1080p in your budget.
A good 720p tv will be better than a budget 1080p tv.
Sky only broadcast in 720p, and for the foreseable future that's how HD will be broadcast0 -
Thanks, this has been pointed out to me http://www.littlewoodsdirect.com/rf/...44&pageSize=12 with Quidco seems like it could be good

Not strictly true. BBC HD broadcast in 1080i, I receive this channel on my FreeSat HD box.
This said, I do agree that with a £500 budget you're much better off looking at a decent 720p TV than a mediocre 1080p one. For sports I would certainly pay attention to the refresh frequency of the TV. For example: I have compared a 32" Sony Bravia which has 100Hz refresh and a 37" Samsung which has 50Hz refresh. The Sony handles fast moving images much much better than the Samsung on which you tend to see the picture following a fast moving object become blocky / pixely where it can't build the picture quick enough for you not to notice. BBC HD on my Sony is phenomenal even though it's only a 720 screen.
It's a little over budget but I am looking at getting a Sony Bravia 40D3500 which is the 1080p big brother of a TV I already have. I've seen this one for £599 delivered, although they won't deliver to Northern Ireland which is very annoying for me.

If a flat-screen TV is touted as 1080i, it really just means it's a 720p TV that converts a 1,080 line interlaced signal into a progressively scanned one.

You also mention that you are just about to get Sky.
If you know someone who already has Sky then get them to recommend you via the Sky website and you can get a Sky+ Box for free or a Sky+ HD box for £75 instead of the usual £150.
I have just signed up via a recommendation from a friend and got the Sky+ box for free. They also get the same offer but there's a £60 set up fee attached to it for them. They can opt for £50 M&S vouchers instead though which is not bad.0
