Buying a car (Tax and CATC/D etc)

if i were to buy a car untaxed how would i go about taxing it in the quickest way ??

also , what is the danger in buying a car that says `was a cat c or cat d but is now all fixed officialy`

To get road tax you need to have insurance and a valid MOT. Remember you need insurance to drive the car so you get insurance aranged before buying the car and picking it up. MOT you can legaly drive a non MOT'd car to a prearranged MOT test center via the most direct route and with in reasonable distance.

It is a grey area regarding driveing the car on the road without tax so it is sometimes best to get the car taken via trailer.

We found it easier to sort the road tax out before the sale of the car to its new owner. The new owner paid for the road tax but we had the insurance etc so it was just easier that way. maybe get the seller to sort it out.

You just need to take your MOT certificate (if its over 3 years old), log book and insurance certificate to the nearest post office that issues road tax-you can check on post office website which ones due. I had the first two but not the third so I bought a days cover from Norwich Union for £11 and they email you a copy of the certificate so I printed it off and got tax no problem.

For the record I then switch my existing insurance from my old car to the new one so aren't recommended driving without insurance. :A

There is no "danger". If the car was cat c you need to make sure its had its VIC test done, it will say so on the log book (otherwise its £36 to get one done). The only thing is checking that its been fixed properly, no bodge repairs etc, and also bear in mind that if you have another crash in the car your insurance is not gong to pay out so much, due to the fact its already been written off, so more likely lost less than half its original value.
There is no danger though, some cars get fixed and can end up being better/stronger than before they crashed. (depends on whats been hit and replaced)

do you know if it increases the insurance premium to get a car declared cat c ?

Cat C shouldn't be a problem for insurance or tax (providing it has had its VIC check done, and recorded). A cat C can be very minor damage on an older vehicle (I bought a written-off Cat C car and repaired it - all it needed was a headlamp, indicator and a front bumper, I knocked a small dent out of the front wing) as the cost of bodywork repairs is so high that it is more than the vehicle value.

Watch out if you are buying an untaxed vehicle from an auction, as the Police like to hang around on sale days and do random checks on vehicles being driven.

No it made no difference to my premium. Especially as accident wasn't my fault.

No it isn't. If it isn't taxed then you can't drive or keep it on the road except to and from a pre-booked MOT.
