Unrecognised direct debit

I have a unrecognised direct debit being taken out of my account. I initially contacted my building society who only provided me with the date the direct debit was set up and the company's address. I contacted the company asking them for details of the direct debit and they didn't reply. After further reading about direct debits I then contacted my building society again and asked for a copy of the direct debit mandate under the direct debit guarantee. I still haven't received anything.
As I have no proof either way if the direct debit is valid am I still entitled to a refund?

Why don't you know if it valid or not? Either you agreed to it or didn't. If the company name is meaningless to you and you can't think of anything the dd could be for (something recently bought on credit?). Then report it to your bank an a debit you didn't set up. Get them to cancel it asap to ensure no further payments go out and ask them to look into a refund.
Can you give the name of the company as they may be "known" for dodgy dd's.

yes, under the dd guarantee your bank must give you a refund, and it should be immediate.0

I don't recognise the name (Amber Select/Credit) but some companies are known by one name and do direct debits in another name. For example our car breakdown insurance is through More Than but the underwriters are Royal Sun Alliance and the direct debit is in their name. I've gone through all the direct debits I can think of and I can't think what this one is for.
I've given them until tomorrow to respond so I'll be contacting my building society for a refund.0 -
It will be car insurance.0

If it's car insurance then it's certainly not authorised.0

I would check on that. My latest renewal said that if I didnt contact them to cancel, they would renew it automatically using last year's details. You may have signed up for something similar if you set it up last year.0 -
Car insurance was cancelled ( we changed to a cheaper company)ages ago and wasn't anything to do with Amber select/credit in the first place. Also the amount isn't enough to be our car insurance unfortunately!!0
