freshers week etc

  • Freshers week is all about socialising and meeting new people! I would definately invest in the freshers pass so that he has the option to join in with his flatmates, or even if your not keen to splash the cash now wait until freshers starts and he talks to his flatmates find out what the status quo is amoung them and he can invest if he likes! if not there are plently of student nights organised by local clubs during this time but being only 17 he will find it VERY tricky and often disappointing attempting to get into them! Believe me, i was only 17 when I started uni and they check your IDs a lot unless it is a rubbish club!! Student unions are great they are great value and can be the source of much information and good nights out etc! He join more permanently later if he wishes!

anyway tell your son to have an AWESOME freshers week, your only really a fresher once, so don't hold back and talk to everyone you can!!
  • P.S. on the cost front i've heard about people spending anything from £30 to £300 during freshers!! take into considoration how much he would tend to drink etc when budgeting! Also the pass divide the cost my the number of days etc its on for say £38 divided by 7 is £5.42 per day, in Glasgow you can easily pay a few pounds to get into a club anyway, a freshers pass will give you access to daytime as well as night time events! Also my union allows under18s in so long as they dont attempt/get caught buying drinks, if they are then they are barred until they are 18!

What does the pass actually 'buy'?
I'll be a mature student - I don't mind going for the odd drink but going nuts and booze every day for freshers week is not my idea of fun! (I'm not as boring as that sound ;-)

I won't be going to the 'Tea with Vicars' night either, that is being featured on my Uni's Freshers week schedule!
Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date :o:D
now at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!
  • I would advise waiting.
I didnt buy a freshers pass in my first week as i wasnt sure if i would go to everything, and im so glad i didnt, everytime we'd go up to the union bar it was be so packed it was unbelievable so we'd end up getting a few bottles and hosting our own parties.

Fellow students in the 2nd or 3rd years im sure would be happy to adivse what the best nights to go out on are.

If you decide not to buy a pass and he decides to go to everything then i dont think it will be the end of the world as the freshers pass is usually only a few pounds less than what it would normally cost.

Oh and i spent about £150 in freshers week. You tend to spend more in the first few weeks due to different uni things and if he forgets something important when moving in.

However, on the first few nights my union bar was giving away free drinks passes so you didnt need to spend that much.
