Rusty Draining board

Hello!

Just moved into a new house (yippee!!!)
but I've noticed that the draining board in the kitchen has got rusty spots on them.
They come off if you wipe them, but I know (from my very basic chemistry knowledge!) that air and water on metal creates rust so using a damp cloth is probably not improving the situation!

Is there anything that I can use to clean the rust off and then prevent more rust developing?

The weird thing is that it's only appearing on the draining board bit and not on either of the sink areas?????

Not that I know of. There are rust treatments for cars and they usually contain phosphoric acid which turns the surface into iron phosphate, which is black...

..I don't know of any clear iron compound, they all seem to be coloured.

Is it stainless steel? Maybe someone used ordinary steel wool on it to clean it which always leaves bits embedded to go rusty. Time and elbow grease will deal with it if this is true.

  • Have a look at https://www.tipking.com for any free advice. What about cleaning the rust spots off and applying a drop of clear nail varnish/ car lacquer to the area.
