HSBC and First Direct Account

I have a Student Account with an interest free overdraft of £1000 with HSBC. However I have recently opened up a First Direct account and have chosen not to switch my account just yet.

What I wanted to know was if I ask First Direct to switch my HSBC account to them will it necessarily improve my credit score and credit history with them. Since I don't use the HSBC account anymore will they transfer my credit balance to them or do you think I should just get the interest free overdraft and bung it into a high interest saving account. Any help would be appreciated, especially since I intend to apply for a credit card with First Direct and want to ensure I get accepted for it.
