Icesave data protection/administration

Options
Not really a gripe, more a surprise.

My partner and I recently got married (congratulations I hear you all say) having lived together for several years. We both had accounts with Icesave.

Since the wedding, my wife has been busy changing her name with all the various banks/dvla/passport etc.

Those that she could go into branches, she did. For online accounts, she sent photocopies of our marriage certificate.

Icesave responsded by saying that they couldn't accept a photocopy and therefore couldn't change her name without the original or a certified copy (fair enough). As she only had the minimum £250 in there and hadn't used the account as intended, she decided the easy option was to close the account and take the money out.

Yesterday I got a letter from Icesave to the effect of 'please find enclosed the documentation you recently requested', together with the photocopy original of our marriage certificate.

Now, it doesn't overly bother me, but (a) I never sent them the certificate, (b) I didn't request it's return.

Quite how they have linked our accounts and returned her documentation to me is surprising me.

As I said, not overly troubling in this instance, but not a good example of their administrative systems and abilities

  • I (well actually my Mum) just had Icesave commit a similar balls-up with her application!

I applied for an Icesave cash isa, and several days later recommended to my parents they should do the same.
My Mum applied on-line, but didn't have her passport to-hand, so they required a copy of some identification to be sent to them - she did this.

She heard nothing back from them for more than a week, so gave them a call.
She was astounded to discover they had used the identification she sent to them, to validate a joint account...... between my Mum and ME!?

Our applications were made independent of each other, both were for their standard cash isa, not any form of joint account (infact, I wasn't even aware they provided joint accounts!)
Why should Ice Save make such an erroneous assumption, based solely on us both sharing the same address & surname

Seems to me a breach of all sorts of data protection & confidentiality laws...

I've heard about other people receiving unknown strangers' bank statements and ID's, but actually creating a joint account between these people? That's something else!

I'm off now to see if they'll let me create a joint account between me and my dog.
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

Pay in a kilo of dog biscuits and a chocolate drop ;)

Seriously I'd chase this up with data protection, sounds a bit suspect to me.

Icesave's administration in this country is carried out by Newcastle Building Society who are usually very sound. Seems like they may have taken on a new member of staff who needs a bit more training?
