How to know if we already have cavity wall insulation?

Probably a daft question, but we recently moved into an early 1980s build house, have no idea if it has cavity wall insulation or if not is suitable for it, as have read that this makes fuel bills lower. Please can anyone suggest the easiest way to find out? Thanks, Sarah

    Hello saraht

I'm no expert but I think it will mean you'll have to drill a hole through the brickwork to check.;)

Look for round holes (filled) in the mortar between bricks all the way up a wall, spaced about 1 metre or so apart. This is where the insulation is 'blown in' and then the holes are filled with new mortar.

If solid cavity wall insulation was used, then the only way to tell would be to drill a test hole.

I was told the best way is to go up into the attic, go to where the roof meets the walls and try to look down the cavity. You may be able to see if it is filled or not.

Also, I know that any-where that has had cavity wall insulation put in since the late 90's, (I think), has to inform a certain government department type place. Unfortunately can't remember what it is called but if you call your council's building regs department they may be able to help you find out who to contact.

Usually the top of the cavity is covered so you cant always see that way. Access is pretty limited in the eaves of roofs so you may only be able to feel for it. Ours is open so it's possible to feel the insulation. Look for the pattern of drill holes outside...you can nearly always see them if you look. The top 2/3rds of our walls are rendered but if you look close you can still see where it's been patched up after the insulation was installed.
You could try contacting CIGA who run the guarantees ... see https://www.ciga.co.uk for contact details.
