HELP! Builders have made a complete mess...

Hi Everyone,
I rent a flat from a local housing association and last Friday they finally sent in some contractors to re-plaster a large living room wall.
I was out all day and left them sandwiches etc after moving the furniture to the opposite end of the room.
When I came back there was dust everywhere all over my furniture, electrical goods, books, floor, kitchen (they had left the internal door open). They hadn't used dust sheets!!!! Lots of my laminate floor is damaged with deep scratches and they had written football slogans and profanities on the rest of the wall!
I called them out asap canceled the workmen coming back on Monday. They turned up and I told them the job was on hold due to the mess they had made. They apologised and went on their way.
To cut a long story short the contractors are scheduled to come back tomorrow and a cleaning team on Monday.
My question is how do I stand with regard to and damages caused to my possessions and furniture? Also due to the dust I have not been able to live in the property since last Friday. Can I make a case against the builders/ Housing association for negligence?
Any help will be truly appreciated as I feel I might just get left holding the baby

Tradesmen on the whole do seem incapable of taking care and cleaning up after themselves. I would make a nuisence of yourself with the HA and in my experience, having dealt with them for many years, they should fight your corner and get something sorted out.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. I had some workmen do a terrible job and a kitchen cupboard fell off wall as they put it up with 2 screws and no raw plugs!!
HA said they not responsible for their workmen so I had to complain to the Housing Ombudsman which has taken a year as they took so long and now HA are asking for receipts for cleaning stuff a year later after telling me they had all they needed for my claim:mad:
Ombudsman agreed with me but said if HA don't pay up then it is yet another complaint I have to make against them!
Hope yours are better, and I hope they make them repair everything as its disheartening0 -
They should have used dust sheets. I'm surprised you weren't given them and told to cover up your stuff though. Your housing association will have a complaints procedure so get a copy of that.
You should be entitled to repair or replacement of the laminate.0 -
didn;t you think to cover up your own furniture ?
putting obscenities on your walls is just not on
i would put in writing how much you think the damage is - cleaning wise
i doubt very much if they will pay to replace a lamianate floor due to scratches
is it your floor or the HAs ?0 -
