Do I stand a better chance of being accepted if I open an account with them first?

I think yes. See Egg Money Credit card application declined, high credit score.0

I'm not so sure. If you have been a customer for a while then definitely yes, but if you just opened an account a few days before with £1 in it then I doubt it.
Being an existing customer means they can look back and see in detail what you have been up to with their accounts, rather than just relying on the minimal details in a credit history report. However it tells them little if you have only just opened the account, so I do not think it will count for much.
This is just what I suspect and I may be wrong, but it seems to make sense.0 -

I that thread PokerPortal managed to get the card by making an apeal against the decision, not because they opened another account first.0

I appealed and got a card after a decline in Feb 05. They only gave me a £1000.00 credit limit but I am very glad they did now...0
