Your i&e should read something like this.
Your income £1,740
OH contribution £175
Household bills
Rent £300
CT £115
Gas/elect £100
water £38
phone £40
tv licence £12
Food £500
Clothes £110
pets £20
house ins £20
Haircuts £40
Total £1,295- wifes contribution £175 = £1,120
Now add
Your personal expenditure
Car insur £35
Mobile £20
Petrol £150
AA £??
Child maint £200
dent/perscr/optic £30
Hol/emergency £50
Total £485
So add
Total household income =£1,915.00
houshold expenditure =£1,295
your personal exp =£ 485
surplus of £135 ,so an IPA in the region of £70
This i by no means perfect(my maths is not that good) but you should get some idea of what/how it works.
