Fresh install of xp - messed it up somehow

Options
Hi,

I havent got a clue what I have done here but I did a fresh install of XP on my son's computer using the Dell CD. Now I know Dell stick loads of crap on but when I check the 'C' drive, there is 107 GB used! I'm sure even Dell dont put that amount of rubbish on.

I chose the option to format the disk and reinstall windows, does anyone know were I went wrong and if its possible to fix it without doing the reinstall again?

Thanks for any help,

  • Nice post. Lots of stuff there but I dont have a clue either...
You installed XP on your sons pc, name & model? You used a restore disc from another pc (dell) that is not the one for your son's pc? When you checked the c drive after the reinstall , Windows is working, however there seems to be some 107GB taken already. You are also saying that windows is NOT working.
Not sure where you went wrong as having read your post a couple of times not certain about your problem.
    Need details details

    Okay, i will start again.

The Desktop is a Dell dimension 4700. I used a the dell xp disc which came with it to do what I thought was a fresh install of windows xp. I must have chosen the wrong thing somewhere and was wondering if anyone could tell me if its possible to fix without running the disc again. If I do need to run the disc again, can anyone tell me what options I need to choose to make sure that the hard drive is totally wiped.

I'm not sure were I said that windows wasnt working but there is no problem with that, the only problem is that there is 107 GB of the hard drive already taken up.

    Thanks,

    MBM

MBM, click on the bumf you have managed to install and see what it is.
As much as I dislike Dell 107GBs just isn't feasible. Are you sure it isn't 107 mbs?

I'd format the disc and do a fresh install as the previous poster said.

    Hi,
sounds to me like you didn't delete the old partition when you re-installed XP so you still have all the old stuff on there. If you re-install XP you need to delete the old partition before installing the new one which you can do as a part of the fresh installation.

And if you don't delete the partition you end up with 2 partitions which could explain why there is still 107Gb on the pc after the fresh installation.
