Paying M&s Card With Another Card?

Hi - we are just about to pay for a car (8K - it's a Lotus Elan - OH is starting his mid life crisis lol:rotfl: ) and transferred some money onto my OHs card from an MBNA 5.9% for life deal, but now I would like to pay on my M&S card to get the points:T :T .
If we do this does anyone know if we can pay the M&S card with my husbands card?
I will ring them but I realy hate dealing with their off shore call centres as I never seem to get a straight answer!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for any advice here.

  • Do you mean a balance transfer?
If so I think you could do it but be aware that a balance transfer fee may be applicable and unless you have a special deal interest will accrue immediately until paid off.
Would you not be better off asking for a higher limit on the M&S card?

no - I want to pay with the M&S card then pay the M&S card off with my husbands card which has the money already on it.

So you have a positive balance on your husband's card that has come from an MBNA promotion at 5.9% LOB?

You now want to buy the car on your M&S card (for the 0.5% in M&S vouchers), and then immediately BT this M&S debt to the card with the positive balance on it, thereby using up the positive balance (and not actually going into debt on that card)?

If that's correct, then yes you will possibly be able to clear the M&S card with a BT from M&S to you husbands card with the positive balance on it since it generally doesn't matter whose name the card is in.

    Some comments:

    1. Will the card with the positive balance still charge a (2-3%) BT fee?

    2. Will the dealer pass on their 2-3% merchant fee for taking a card payment?

    3. I wonder if the (money laundering) alarm bells will ring with the provider of the card with the positive balance on it?

Thanks yorkshire boy - we just want to pay the M&S card with my husbands credit card with the positive balance like you would pay the balance with a debit card - not a balance transfer but a normal payment. Is this possible?

I wouldn't think so. It would normally have to be by either a balance transfer to the card with the positive balance, or you would have to ask them to transfer the positive balance to your current account from where you'd settle the M&S card.

What you're doing is very messy and you could come unstuck. Depending on the card provider, they could get nasty and insist on sending the positive balance back from whence it came (I assume you paid a 3% BT fee?). Or worse, they could block the account and flag it for investigation by their AML team.

Who's the other card provider? I do hope it's Egg, and I do also hope it's not a Halifax run card!

When I log onto to my M&S crd it asks me for a DEBIT card to make a payment. I'm fairly sure that most if not all credit cards do NOT allow you to pay one off with another (except inthe case of balance transfers) as this would mean robbing peter to pay paul and getting into worse debt (not that the company's would care!)

Why don't you want to do a balance transfer? Its the same thing though you MIGHT incur a small fee.

Thanks for both replies. I transferred it to my hubbies card from MBNA and there was no transfer fee (recent special offer card).
It's my fault really as I did it in a hurry and then decided to get the M&S points if possible. I think we will just pay it on hubbies card and let the points go!
    Thanks again.

If you're using ONLY the positive balance you may not enjoy section 75 protection (because they haven't provided 'credit'). Is that a problem?

I don't think so - it is a reputable garage and comes with a years warranty.
    Thanks.
