Recommendations for Rome hotel?

Thinking of going to Rome for my Mam's 65th birthday in December- will hopefully be there over New Years, so looking for something close with a bit of atmosphere but comfortable for the oldie

Have no idea which areas are the best to be located?

Any recommendations/advice gratefully received: some ideas/recommendations so far...

Any ideas on what to do/where to go etc also welcomed- want to make this holiday really special for my Mam - have considered Prague (too cold) and NYC (too busy), just trying to do the right thing!!
