Girlfriends secret debt

  • I've asked her this a few times. She said that she didn't take an interest in things - unopened mail, statements... She had no idea about her current account.

She also says that it all just added up with general spending. It does concern me a little. We have a nice life but certainly not extravagent. She pays just £100 a month towards household bills. It's my house so I take care of the mortgage. She also buys the majority of the food. Her parents are not the best with money too so I guess it's in the genes!

I think she made some bad descisions - taking a loan to pay off credit card debt.

We will deffo tighten the belt together. I guess I will have to pay out more on food, bills etc... I'll use my spare cash to over pay the mortgage!

    Hi Chris,
Sounds a bit like she was burying her head in the sand a little. How is your girlfriend in general? When I had bad debts, I was basically spend spend spend because I was very unhappy at the time, I would ignore statements, miss payments etc and occasionally I would panic and take on loans etc in order to pay them off and then max out the credit cards again. If only the internet and MSE had been about then but I have learned my lesson as I am sure your girl will. For her to tell you about her debt must of taken her courage and also it shows that she realises that she needed to do something, it was probably her light bulb moment.
  • She has been a bit down - this whole thing lurking in the background can't have helped. I hope that this will ease things for her.

awww chris arent you lovely :D .... ithink its a good idea what horace said... if she gets an incentive to keep the credit cards at 0% and lifetime of balance she could cover the loan at a cheaper intrest rate... egg do a 0% credit card that lets you balance transfer from current account she could try for that and get the amount for the loan also close the other credit cards so in theory only have a virgin and egg credit card then just makesure they are paid before 0% runs out within the year then hopefully by this time she will have realised that cash is king and pay with what she has not what is offered on credit :D hehe amy
The loans will pay themselves the credit cards need a kicking :money: DFW Long haulers supporter 132!!:T
  • so do you think we could move the personal loan on to a credit card at 0%?

Also, it just occured to me that she is a part time student. Do you think there might be any mileage in getting her a student account?

    Thanks again everyone!

Dont know about student loans but if she is entitled & it has benefits, why not?
The personal loan could be a good idea if you would be paying out less % on it. otherwise what would be the point? You should try working out what would be the total payment before you decide.

Be careful... she sounds the perfect candidate for letting you take over everything while she carries on regardless racking up more debt in the background. She doesn't want to sort it and she can't be bothered... so how exactly is she going to change her ways so that this doesn't happen again?

We've just been to the bank and they have agreed to stop the next lot of charges. Hope it was right to accept this.
