Spending in Menorca (Spain)

Hello,

I'm off to Menorca next month - and after some advice on spending money.

My plan is to just to buy some Euros back here in the UK for general spending money, and then use my Visa (First Direct) in any restaurants, and for possibly getting out any more euros that I may need from an ATM on the island.

Is this a good idea?

I bank with First Direct... and have no idea what fee is attached when using my Visa to either pay, or withdraw while in spain.

Thanks for any advice.

I would try and get a Nationwide Credit card before you go. Just been to Menorca and got euros from M & S before I went using my M & S card, which had no commision or fee and I can pay the bill ( in full) at the end of this month,I got 1.21 euros to the £1 .I used my Nationwide card to buy some sandals and the bill has arrived and with no commision or fee I see I got 1.27 euros for my £1...wish I'd taken less cash with me and used my Nationwide card more often.
  • I reckon that no MSE'r travelling abroad should be without a Nationwide VISA because of the no fee policy.
Take enough currency to get through the first day / pay taxi from airport etc whilst you locate the ATM's where you stay.
I use my Nationwide Flexaccount solely for travel money then spend on Visa or withdraw from ATM whilst away. Just transfer your holiday savings in a few days before you go. You need to pay in £100 when you get your card through to open the account. Apply online at least 2 weeks before you go to get your card and PIN through in time.
We opened a separate account for my OH for the same purpose and to "spread the risk" as it were by having two accounts\cards available to use when away.
Remember - always choose to make the ATM transaction in local currency and not GBP to get better exchange rates.
